The Standard for Leaders — Lesson 9

EVV 2026 — Living the Word: Faith in Action
Thesis: God does not relax His standards for leaders—He intensifies them. Those who lead God’s people must obey like everyone else, accept correction when they sin, protect the Lord’s name from blasphemy, serve instead of dominate, know God’s word deeply, sacrifice for the flock, and keep growing until the day they die.

Opening Truth

Leadership does not lower the standard; it raises the responsibility. God never gives authority so a man can drift into pride or laziness. He gives leadership to protect His people—so the man must live under the same God he represents. A leader who will not submit to God is not fit to lead God’s people.

1) Obeying the Rules Like Everyone Else

A man being “close to the holy things” does not excuse disobedience. Nadab and Abihu were priests who saw God’s glory, yet they were consumed when they offered “strange fire.” God’s explanation: “By those who come near Me I will be treated as holy.” Leadership demands stricter reverence, not flexibility.

2) Accountability and Correction

Scripture does not allow leaders to become “untouchable.” When King Uzziah became proud and usurped priestly work, eighty valiant priests opposed him to protect holiness. Elders must be protected from slander, but “those who continue in sin, rebuke in the presence of all.” No favoritism. No fear of man.

False AssumptionBiblical RealityScripture Anchor
“Position gives flexibility.”Leadership demands stricter reverence.Lev. 10:1–3
“Results justify methods.”God values obedience over success.1 Sam. 15:22–23
“Leaders are above rebuke.”Leaders must be corrected for sin.1 Tim. 5:20

3) Protecting the Name of God

Leadership failure becomes a weapon in the mouths of unbelievers. When David sinned, he gave “occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme.” A leader’s failure weakens the cause of Christ publicly. Because leadership carries visibility and credibility, God expects more.

4) Servant Leadership vs. Gentile Rule

Jesus directly condemned worldly leadership styles where great men lord it over others. “It is not this way among you.” Greatness is defined by service. Eldership exists for protection, guidance, and comfort—not to feed the ego or dominate the flock.

5) Knowledge and Sacrifice

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” Leaders must build knowledge into the people. Elders must be students of Christ’s law, able to refute contradiction and guide through real problems. Furthermore, they must follow the Good Shepherd who “lays down His life for the sheep.” This means sacrificing time, convenience, and comfort for souls.

6) Continual Spiritual Growth

Even the apostles were grown over time. Elders must meet qualifications before appointment, but appointment is not perfection. Leaders must keep studying, praying, and investing in their own spiritual health, or they will dry out and weaken the flock.
