God Gives Grace
to the Humble
Waupaca Church of Christ — Ed Rangel
You Cannot Fight God
and Win.
God gives conquering grace
only to the humble
Pride places a man in active opposition to God.
but gives grace to the humble.”
The War You
Cannot Win
James 4:6
Greek Word Study
Not mild disapproval — divine military opposition.
God Has Never Lost That War
- Pharaoh — buried at the Red Sea
- Nebuchadnezzar — eating grass in Babylon
- Herod — consumed by worms on his throne
Greater Grace
μείζονα χάριν — meizona charin
- Greater than lust
- Greater than spiritual adultery
- Greater than the divided heart
- Greater than the devil himself
Grace is not
forgiveness after the battle.
It is power for the battle.
God cannot fill
a clenched fist.
Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”
The Battle Plan
of Humility
James 4:7–8
Submit to God
ὑποτάγητε — fall into rank under a commander
- The foundational act of humility
- You cannot resist the devil while resisting God
“Not My will, but Yours be done.” — Luke 22:42
Resist the Devil
ἀντίστητε — stand against, hold ground
- Submission first — then resistance
- The devil flees from the submitted
- Christ stood under the Father’s will — Satan departed
The devil does not flee
from religious words.
He flees from a life
that has bowed to God.
Draw Near to God
ἐγγίσατε — come close, approach
- Covenant language — return and be received
- Prayer, Scripture, obedience
- “He will draw near to you” — guaranteed
Two Positions
The Proud
God opposes
Grace withheld
Battle lost
The Humble
God supplies
Grace received
Victory given
and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Be miserable and mourn and weep.”
The Pain
That Heals
James 4:8b–10
Greek Word Study
James says that condition is intolerable.
Greek Word Study
Because sin kills fellowship with God, usefulness in the kingdom, and the soul.
Two Kinds of Sorrow
Worldly
Mourns consequences
Protects image
Produces death
Godly
Mourns the offense
Breaks the heart
Produces repentance
2 Corinthians 7:10
Grace flows
only downward.
It cannot reach the man
who refuses to bow.
in the presence of the Lord,
and He will exalt you.”
The Pattern of Christ
- Humiliation before exaltation
- The cross before the crown
- You do the bowing — God does the lifting
Philippians 2:8–9
The road up in the kingdom
always runs downhill
through repentance.
You will never stand tall
before God until you
have fallen on your face
before Him.
What Must I Do?
- Name the pride you are defending
- Stop asking for victory where you refuse surrender
- Mourn your sin — do not manage it
- Humble yourself before you sleep tonight
Invitation
- Outside of Christ? Believe. Repent. Confess. Be baptized.
- Divided heart? Draw near to God today.
The throne of grace is open —
but it is reached only by those who kneel.
Acts 2:38 · Romans 6:3–4
