A man may appear disciplined in public, careful in conduct, active in service, and regular in worship…

…and still destroy everything with a SINGLE SENTENCE.

The Cost of Words

  • Homes collapse over words.
  • Congregations fracture over words.
  • Reputations burn because of words.

The Proof of Wisdom

Speech reflects a Christian’s maturity and self-control, demonstrating that the ultimate proof of wisdom is the discipline of the tongue.

Three Movements

  • I. The Weight of Responsibility
  • II. The Terrifying Power of the Tongue
  • III. The Contradiction and the Cure

The Weight of Responsibility

James 3:1–2

James 3:1

“Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.”

Accountability

Teaching is not a platform for ambition.

It is a weight of accountability.

Jeremiah 23:28

“The prophet who has a dream may relate his dream, but let him who has My word speak My word in truth.”

Matthew 12:36

“But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.”

Leadership & Speech

Scripture does not authorize hierarchy;

It authorizes responsibility.

Words shape the conscience of a congregation.

Before you speak for God, ask: “Am I prepared to answer to God for what I am about to say?”

James 3:2

“For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.”

The Measure of Maturity

Spiritual maturity is not abstract.

It is measurable.

Luke 6:45

“For his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.”

The tongue is not the source of sin;

It is the outlet.

The Terrifying Power

James 3:3–6

James 3:3-4

“If we put the bits into the horses’ mouths… we direct their entire body. Look at the ships also… directed by a very small rudder…”

The Bridle

Power without restraint becomes danger.

Power under restraint becomes usefulness.

A Litmus Test

A man who says,
“That’s just how I talk,”
has already confessed immaturity.

The Rudder

Large vessel. Strong winds.

Direction is intentional.

Who is the Pilot?

  • If anger pilots, the tongue steers to destruction.
  • If pride pilots, the tongue steers to boasting.
  • If Christ pilots, the tongue steers to truth.
James 3:5-6

“See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity… and is set on fire by hell.”

Combustion

A small spark in dry conditions becomes an uncontrollable blaze.

When speech is corrupted, it becomes a miniature ecosystem of sin.

Gehenna

The valley once associated with burning children becomes the image for speech that burns relationships, reputations, and souls.

Whispers that Feed Flames

  • Psalm 52:2 – The tongue devises destruction.
  • Proverbs 26:20 – Without a whisperer, contention quiets down.
  • Ephesians 4:31 – Put away clamor and slander.

The Contradiction & The Cure

James 3:7–12

James 3:8

“But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.”

Inability is not an excuse; it is a call to dependence.

The Contradiction

With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men.

A Moral Violation

To curse a man is to insult the image of God in that man.

Worship on the lips, contempt in conversation.

Nature’s Consistency

Creation is consistent. Springs do not produce opposites.

Only divided hearts produce divided speech.

The Cure

The problem is not vocabulary. It is allegiance.

Control of the tongue is evidence of a submitted will.

When Words Have Wounded

Confess careless words.

Seek reconciliation where speech has wounded.

Submit your tongue to the authority of Christ.

Submit to Christ

  • Hear the Word of God
  • Believe that Jesus is the Son of God
  • Repent of your sins
  • Confess Christ before men
  • Be Baptized for the remission of sins
