The Eternal Plan of God
Text: Ephesians 1:3–11 (NASB 1995) | Study Guide
THESIS: God’s plan to save man through Christ was established before the world began, revealed through history, fulfilled in Christ, and now demands obedient faith from all who would be saved.
MEMORY VERSE: “Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.” — Ephesians 1:4
Lesson Objectives:
- See that redemption in Christ was purposed before the foundation of the world.
- Understand the cross was the execution of an eternal plan, not a reaction to a crisis.
- Correct false teachings regarding unconditional election and postponed kingdoms.
I. PURPOSED BEFORE THE WORLD BEGAN
Men often speak as though salvation began when man got into trouble. But redemption is not divine improvisation, and the cross is not heaven’s emergency repair. Ephesians 1:4-5 places redemption in God’s eternal will. He had already fixed the saving place, the saving blessings, and the saving destiny of His people in His Son before history began.
1. Read 1 Peter 1:19–20. What does the foreknowledge of the Lamb teach us about the nature of the cross?
2. Read Genesis 3:15. How does this early promise prove that God was not caught off guard by human rebellion?
II. REVEALED AND FULFILLED IN TIME
What God purposed in eternity, He made known and fulfilled in time. History is not random motion. Jesus came at the exact moment fixed by divine wisdom (Galatians 4:4). The Old Testament is a unified witness moving toward Christ’s suffering, resurrection, and the gospel proclamation.
3. Premillennialism teaches that Jesus failed to set up His kingdom and the church is a “Plan B.” Using Colossians 1:13, how do you refute this and prove the kingdom is a present reality?
III. ELECTION IS “IN HIM,” NOT APART FROM THE GOSPEL
Many twist Ephesians 1 by separating election from Christ, acting as though Paul teaches unconditional individual salvation (TULIP). But look at the text: in Him, in Christ, in the Beloved. God did not arbitrarily choose individuals to be saved in the dark; He chose that the realm of salvation would be in Christ. We enter that realm by hearing the gospel and obeying it (Eph. 1:13; Gal. 3:26-27).
4. How does the locative phrase “in Him” dismantle the false doctrine of arbitrary, unconditional election?
5. According to Romans 6:3-4 and Galatians 3:26-27, what is the specific, revealed point in time when a believer actually enters “into Christ” where these blessings are found?
IV. THE DEMAND FOR OBEDIENT FAITH NOW
If God purposed salvation before the world began and fulfilled it in Christ, then neglecting the gospel is no small matter. Neglect is deadly (Heb. 2:1-3). Once God has spoken fully in Christ, postponement becomes rebellion.
6. Read Hebrews 2:1-3. Why is a passive, drifting faith considered just as dangerous as open, vocal rebellion against God?
Compact Word Study
πρόθεσις (Prothesis) – Purpose / Set Plan: God’s saving work rests in deliberate intentional design. It is not a frantic reaction.
μυστήριον (Mystērion) – Mystery: In the NT, this is not a permanent riddle, but a hidden truth that has now been revealed at the appointed time.
PERSONAL RESPONSE & APPLICATION
The Gospel Demand: We must bow to revealed truth. Entering God’s eternal plan requires obedient faith: Hear the gospel, Believe in Christ, Repent of sins, Confess Christ, and be Baptized for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38).
Personal Reflection:
- What truth must I hold? My salvation in Christ was not an afterthought; it is anchored in eternity.
- What must I reject? I must reject false doctrines of “faith-only,” unconditional security, and a postponed kingdom.
- What must I change? Where have I treated doctrine casually or allowed my faith to drift?
