When Tears Teach
Text: Lamentations 1:16; James 1:12
Thesis: Sorrow, submitted to God, is a severe teacher that strips away false comforts, builds endurance, and forces the soul to trust the Lord alone.
I. Submission Over Sentiment (Lam. 1:16)
- Bring your grief into the presence of God rather than hiding in distraction.
- Distinguish between the honest tears of a saint and the lawless rebellion of the world.
- Interrogate your sorrow to see if it is producing humble prayer or bitter accusation.
- Bow your grief before the Lord instead of letting the pain become your master.
II. The Schoolhouse of Endurance (James 1:12)
- Stay under the weight of the trial without abandoning your covenant faithfulness.
- Face the reality that human control dies where deep sorrow begins.
- Repent of the pride that demands to rule outcomes belonging only to God.
- Value the internal approval of God more than the immediate relief of the flesh.
III. The Failure of Earthly Comfort (Lam. 3:22-23)
- Recognize that family, friends, and brethren make for poor saviors of the soul.
- Watch as God thins out secondary supports to expose your primary dependence.
- Cling to the Man of Sorrows who fully entered the wreckage of human grief.
- Relocate your trust from paper walls to the God whose mercies are new every morning.
Conclusion Drive: Do not waste your tears on self-pity or bitter resistance. Let sorrow refine what is real and burn away what is decorative in your faith.
Invitation Drive: If your pain has exposed a foundation of sand, turn to the solid Rock. Believe the Gospel, repent of your sins, confess Christ, and be baptized today for the remission of your sins.
Gem: God does not ask you to deny your grief; He commands you to bow your grief before Him.
