Key Question of the Chapter: “Do you believe this?” (11:26)
Pre-Study Preparation (Before class) ▾
Read John 11 once without stopping. Read again and underline these themes. Use the box for quick notes on what you saw.
“Book of Signs” ends here (John 1-12). The miracle in chapter 11 triggers the plot that leads directly to the cross (11:53).
Section 1 – Delay: Love, Glory, and Timing (John 11:1-16) ▸
Two love words:
Meaning:
Fear: “They tried to stone You” (John 10:31).
Section 2 – Declaration: “I Am the Resurrection and the Life” (John 11:17-27) ▸
Martha: “If You had been here…” (11:21)
Jesus: “Your brother will rise again.” (11:23)
Martha: “I know… on the last day.” (11:24)
Two clauses (write them as the lecture explains):
Section 3 – Tears + Anger: Christ’s Compassion and Holy Indignation (John 11:28-37) ▸
Section 4 – Commands + Resurrection: Stone, Voice, and Graveclothes (John 11:38-44) ▸
Section 5 – Division + Plot: Evidence and Accountability (John 11:45-57) ▸
Caiaphas means political convenience. John explains God’s purpose: Jesus would die for others (representative), not for one nation only (scope wider), to gather into one people under one Head.
Review, Test Prep & Teaching Drills ▸
Sign: a miracle with meaning—evidence pointing to Christ’s identity (John 20:30–31)
Glory: God’s character and authority made visible in real events
Believe (John): trust + allegiance (not mere mental agreement)
Resurrection: God’s act of raising the dead, climaxing in the last day (John 5:28-29)
In 3 minutes, explain: vv. 5-6 (delay), vv. 25-26 (declaration), vv. 43-44 (commands), vv. 47-48 (institutional fear).
John 11 is not a story to admire. It is a chapter that demands a verdict. “Do you believe this?” (John 11:26). Answer it—with obedient faith.
For Your Bible Margin ▸
Writing in your Bible is not disrespectful—it is discipleship. Your margins become a personal commentary, a memory aid, a teaching tool, and a record of spiritual growth. Years from now, your notes will remind you what the text taught, what you learned, and how you explained it to others (2 Tim 2:2).
Use short phrases, symbols, cross-references, and keywords. Mark the claims of Christ, the commands of Christ, and the responses of people.
