James, Module 2

Living the Word

Module 2

The Anatomy of Temptation

Session 1

The Source

James 1:13

The Shift

Verses 2-12: Trials (Outside Pressure)
Verses 13-18: Temptation (INSIDE Pressure)

The Blame Game

When obedience is costly, we look for excuses.
“God put me here.”
“God wired me this way.”

STOP.

James 1:13

The Command

“Let no one say when he is tempted…”

The Lie

“…I am being tempted by GOD.”

The Distortion

We think God’s Sovereignty = God’s Authorship of Evil.
James says NO.

The Difference

Testing

Aims at APPROVAL (Growth).

The Difference

Temptation

Aims at COLLAPSE (Sin).

GOD IS HOLY

The Nature of God

“For God cannot be tempted by evil…”

Apeirastos

Untemptable

Evil has no LEVERAGE on God.
He has no hook for sin to grab.

The Consequence

“…and He Himself does not tempt anyone.”

The Logic

Because God has no desire for evil…
He never pushes you toward it.

The Danger

If you blame God, you will not fight sin.
You will play the VICTIM.

“A man’s own folly ruins his life, yet his heart rages against the LORD.”

Proverbs 19:3

Takeaway

God tests for strength.
Satan tempts for sin.

Takeaway

Blaming God is SLANDER against His character.

WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?

Session 2

The Anatomy

James 1:14-15

The Real Source

“But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by HIS OWN LUST.”

James 1:14

AN INSIDE JOB

Possession

“His OWN lust.”
It is not generic. It is personal.
It is customized to YOU.

Step 1

Carried Away

Exelkomenos

To be drawn out from SAFETY.

The Hunter

Sin separates the prey from the herd.
Isolation precedes collapse.

Step 2

Enticed

Deleazomenos

To bait the HOOK.

The Angler

Lust hides the metal hook.
It promises life but delivers death.

THE CYCLE

The Biology of Sin

“Then when lust has CONCEIVED, it gives birth to sin…”

James 1:15

Step 3

Conception

The union of Will and Desire.
Once you agree to the thought, sin is alive.

Not Harmless

Sin is not a pet.
It grows. It matures.

The Result

“…and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth DEATH.”

Step 4

Death

Separation from God.
Destruction of life.

The Formula

1. Desire (The Look)

2. Deception (The Bait)

3. Disobedience (The Birth)

4. DEATH

Kill It Early

Stop it at the THOUGHT.
Don’t wait for the Act.

Recap

God Tests.
Lust Tempts.
Sin Kills.

Journal Prompt

Trace the path of one desire that repeatedly traps you.

Identify

What is the BAIT?

What is the HOOK?

THE DEFENSE

Session 3

The Defense

James 1:16-18 & Q/A

The Warning

“Do not be DECEIVED, my beloved brethren.”

James 1:16

The Character of God

“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights…”

James 1:17

No Shadows

Sin shifts like shadows.
God is UNCHANGING light.

The Contrast

Lust offers BAIT.
God offers GIFTS.

The New Birth

“In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth…”

James 1:18

Two Births

Lust gives birth to DEATH.
God gives birth to LIFE.

First Fruits

We are set apart.
We are proof of His goodness.
