Faith Without
Favoritism
James 2:1–9
Deuteronomy 10:17
“For the LORD your God is the God of gods… who does not show partiality nor take a bribe.”
The Velvet Rope
In the world, money buys access:
- • VIP Lines
- • Expedited Service
- • Naming Rights
Does this mindset govern our worship?
Do we measure a visitor’s worth by the blood of Christ…
…or by the clothes on their back?
A Theological Crisis
James is not correcting poor manners. He is confronting corrupted theology.
“To show partiality is to forget the glory of Christ.”
The Thesis
Living faith treats all individuals within the Church without favoritism or rank, recognizing that prejudice violates the royal law of love.
I. The Failure of Favoritism
James 2:1–4
“My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism.”
James 2:1You cannot hold faith in the Lord of Glory while chasing human glory.
James 2:3
“You pay special attention to the one wearing fine clothes…”
RICH
“Sit Here”
(Invitation)
POOR
“Stand There”
(Management)
James 2:4
“Have you not… become judges with evil motives?”
If our welcome depends on their wallet, our worship is compromised.
When the church elevates members based on status, it becomes a corrupt courtroom where human pride sits on the bench.
II. The Reversal of Values
James 2:5–7
“Did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom?”
James 2:5God ignores the wallet to look at the heart.
Who are we impressing?
- 1. The Rich Oppress You.
- 2. The Rich Drag You to Court.
- 3. The Rich Blaspheme the Noble Name.
Why honor the enemies of the Cross?
To dishonor the humble Christian is to despise whom God has elected.
III. The Victory of the Royal Law
James 2:8–9
Leviticus 19:18 / James 2:8
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
You would never want to be told to sit at a footstool. Do not command it of another.
James 2:9
“But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.”
Love is the non-negotiable constitution of the Kingdom.
The Ground is Level
- In Christ, wealth buys no access.
- In Christ, poverty brings no shame.
- Only obedience matters.
Repent of favoritism. Let the Royal Law rule.
