TAMING THE TONGUE

James 3:1-12

Preacher Ed | Waupaca Church of Christ

Created by EVV Keeping the Faith 2026

A man may appear disciplined in public, careful in conduct, active in service, and regular in worship…

…and still destroy everything with a single sentence.

The Destructive Power

Homes collapse over words.

Congregations fracture over words.

Reputations burn because of words.

“Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.” James 3:1

Accountability

Teaching is not a platform for ambition.

It is a weight of accountability.

“The prophet who has a dream may relate his dream, but let him who has My word speak My word in truth.” Jeremiah 23:28
“But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.” Matthew 12:36

Leadership and Speech

Scripture does not authorize hierarchy;

It authorizes responsibility.

Words shape the conscience of a congregation.

“For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.” James 3:2

The Measure of Maturity

Spiritual maturity is not abstract.

It is measurable.

“For his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.” Luke 6:45

The tongue is not the source of sin.

It is the outlet.

Horse Bit

The Bridle

The will that can check speech can check impulse, anger, pride, and envy.

A Litmus Test

A man who says,
“That’s just how I talk,”
has already confessed immaturity.

Ship Rudder

The Rudder

Large vessel. Strong winds.

Direction is intentional.

Who is the Pilot?

If anger pilots the heart, the tongue steers toward destruction.

If pride pilots the heart, the tongue steers toward boasting.

If Christ pilots the heart, the tongue steers toward truth.

Tongue Fire
“And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity… and is set on fire by hell.” James 3:6

Combustion

A small spark in dry conditions becomes an uncontrollable blaze.

When speech is corrupted, it becomes a miniature ecosystem of sin.

Gehenna

The valley once associated with burning children becomes the image for speech that burns relationships, reputations, and souls.

Human Inability

“But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.” James 3:8
Men Talking

The Contradiction

With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men.

A Moral Violation

To curse a man is to insult the image of God in that man.

Worship on the lips, contempt in conversation.

Nature’s Law

Creation is consistent. Springs do not produce opposites.

Only divided hearts produce divided speech.

If your mouth contradicts your worship,

Your worship is compromised.

The Cure

The problem is not vocabulary.
It is allegiance.

Conclusion

Control of the tongue is evidence of a submitted will.

Christ must rule the mouth as surely as He rules the life.

Invitation

Confess careless words.

Seek reconciliation where speech has wounded.

Submit your tongue to the authority of Christ.
