THREE ROADS TO RUIN

CAIN, BALAAM, KORAH (JUDE 11)

Created by EVV Keeping the Faith 2026

THE BIG IDEA

Apostasy follows an escalating path.
CAIN: Self-willed religion.
BALAAM: Greed-driven seduction.
KORAH: Counter-speech against God’s authority.

JUDE 11 (NASB 1995)

“Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, and for pay they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.”

Created by EVV Keeping the Faith 2026

SENTENCE, NOT SENTIMENT

“Woe to them!” is formal judgment, not sentiment.
It aligns with prophetic oracles (Isa 5, Matt 23).
Jude is declaring condemnation over a course already set.

ONE ROAD, THREE MARKERS

1GONE: Deliberate direction.
2RUSHED HEADLONG: Restraint collapses.
3PERISHED: Settled outcome.

ED’S GEMS

“The road determines the destination. You cannot walk in Cain’s way and arrive with the faithful, rush into Balaam’s error and receive the crown, or gainsay God like Korah and stand in the judgment.”

THE WAY OF CAIN

STAGE 1: DIRECTION

Cain was religious. His sin was self-authorized religion.
“I will decide what is acceptable; God must accept my version.”
When corrected, he hardens and turns hostile.

THE ERROR OF BALAAM

STAGE 2: MOTIVE & ACCELERATION

“For pay” exposes profit-shaped corruption.
Truth is bent to secure pay; the flock is steered into compromise.
When direct attack fails, seduction succeeds.

REBELLION OF KORAH

STAGE 3: OUTCOME

Antilogia: Contradiction, counter-speech, gainsaying.
Wrapped in moral language: “All the congregation are holy.”
Teaches the church to treat boundaries as oppression.

ED’S GEMS

“Jude writes their end as settled… It is direction chosen, restraint collapsed, ruin certain—so the church stops treating error as harmless and starts treating it as lethal.”

WARNING: CAIN

God does not accept preference as authority.
Whenever men demand that God accept their preferences—whether in worship, morality, or doctrine—they repeat Cain’s sin.

AHAZ’S BORROWED ALTAR

2 KINGS 16

Copies a pagan altar, moves the LORD’s altar aside.
Keeps the language of worship while rewriting the terms of obedience.
Created by EVV Keeping the Faith 2026

WARNING: BALAAM

When repentance is softened, obedience is minimized, or truth is withheld to preserve advantage, the error is not harmless.
When error is ignored to protect crowds or contributions, grace is being sold.

THE TEMPLE TABLES

MATTHEW 21

The issue wasn’t money; it was profit reshaping the things of God.
Jesus didn’t negotiate—He overturned tables.
Jude does the same with words.
Created by EVV Keeping the Faith 2026

WARNING: KORAH

“Just asking questions” to nullify what God established is gainsaying.
There is no “democratized” holiness that grants permission to ignore the NT pattern or Christ’s headship.

ABSALOM AT THE GATE

2 SAMUEL 15

Absalom undermines the throne with words.
Questions and reframes until loyalty shifts and authority collapses.
Rebellion wrapped in the language of fairness and reform.
Created by EVV Keeping the Faith 2026

ED’S GEMS

“There is no harmless apostasy—only delayed judgment. Jude does not leave room for ‘safe’ rebellion. The moment a man chooses the road, Scripture already knows the destination.”

APPLICATION: CAIN

Q.Where does opinion end and rebellion begin?
Q.Are you more offended by sin itself—or by being corrected for your sin?
Created by EVV Keeping the Faith 2026

APPLICATION: BALAAM

Q.When teachers reshape obedience to keep peace or support, how is that functionally Balaam’s error?
Q.If truth cost you status or relationships, would you dilute it to keep the “pay”?
Created by EVV Keeping the Faith 2026

APPLICATION: KORAH

Q.How can “just asking questions” become gainsaying when Scripture has already spoken plainly?
Q.Do you submit to Scripture when it limits you—or argue against the boundaries God has set?

HOMEWORK & ACTION

1Identify one area of worship based on “it feels right” instead of “it is written,” and correct it.
2Eliminate one source of influence that sells comfort over repentance.
3Encourage one faithful act of shepherding this week that refuses compromise.
